- Edmund G. “Pat” Brown captures nearly 60 percent of the vote in defeating William Knowland for governor. Brown becomes the state’s first Democratic governor since Culbert Olsen’s victory in 1938.
- Construction begins on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
- Oakland-based KTVU officially signs on the air, becoming the Bay Area’s fourth commercial television station.
- The Brooklyn Dodgers (Los Angeles) and New York Giants (San Francisco) are the first major league baseball franchises to move to the West Coast.
- Comedian Mort Sahl is the Master of Ceremonies at the inaugural Monterey Jazz Festival. Performers at the event include Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie, and Billie Holiday
